Looking for Jesus

PHOTO: Kasia Szumska
“Looking for Jesus” is the latest project of Katarzyna Kozyra, influenced by the, so-called, Jerusalem syndrome – an acute delusional disorder, described in medicine only in the second half of the 20th century. Those suffering from it, when visiting the Holy Land, identify themselves with biblical characters, most often with the Messiah.

The artist has traveled several times to Jerusalem to find those who, at the beginning of the 21st century, believe that they are Jesuses. The first journey took place in 2012. The results of all trips are hundreds of hours of recorded interviews, photos of the city – a stage of religious rituals, where people of different beliefs, faiths and skin colors appear, are trying to convince the artist of their divinity and truthfulness, of new Messiahs and the colorful crowd of pilgrims and residents constantly surrounding her. Kozyra reaches amazing personalities. Behind each hero there are fascinating stories that, put together, create a project about implementing faith, its place and role in today’s world and the values around which we build our lives.

Katarzyna Kozyra’s Foundation is the producer of the project, which is created in cooperation with: MINISTRY OF CULTURE (PL), ATLAS SZTUKI (PL), W&W A LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY (DE), MOMENTUM THE GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR TIME BASED-ART (DE), MUSRARA THE NAGGAR SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY, MEDIA, NEW MUSIC, VISUAL COMMUNICATION (IL), STATE GALLERY OF ART IN SOPOT (PL), POLISH FILM INSTITUTE
