“Secondary Archive. Women Artists in War”: an Open Call for emerging Ukrainian women artists – OPEN CALL RESULTS

The international jury selected from among 120 submissions, 5 artists whose first-person contributions will be added to the Secondary Archive.

The finalists of the Open Call:

and the overall winner is Daria Chechushkova.

The work of the selected finalists, together with 10 other artists selected by the curators – Kateryna Iakovlenko, Oksana Briukhovetska, Alya Segal – will also become part of ‘The Sky Is Open. Voices From Ukraine’, an archive of works by artists from Ukraine created after 24 February 2022. The project will culminate in an exhibition at the Galeria Labirynt with the participation of the competition winners, which will also be an opportunity for the archive to go beyond its virtual framework.

All finalists will get a fee for participating in the project and the overall winner will also be given a financial prize to support her artistic practice.

JURY

Bogna Stefańska – is an art historian, curator, co-founder of the HER Docs Film Festival and researcher of the Anti-Fascist Year Atlas. Curator of the Polish part of the Secondary Archive.

Erëmirë Krasniqi – art writer, curator and researcher. From 2017 to 2024, Erëmirë was the executive director of Oral History Kosovo. In 2024, Erëmirë will curate artist Doruntina Kastrati for the Pavilion of the Republic of Kosovo at the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. In the SA project, she represents Kosovo.

Iga Maria Szczepańska – director of the Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation, coordinator of the Secondary Archive project since 2022. Producer and performance artist.

Kateryna lakovlenko – project supervisor, curator and publicist originally from Ukraine. Editor-in-chief of the portal “Suspilne Kultura”, researcher, author and compiler of the publication “Why there are great female artists in Ukrainian art”.

Oksana Briukhovetska – project supervisor, artist, curator and publicist. Her practice deals with the social and feminist dimensions of art. At SA she is responsible for the development of research concepts.

Róna Kopeczky – Budapest-based art historian and curator, co-founder of Easttopics, a platform dedicated to Eastern European art life. In 2024, Róna will be the curator for the Pavilion of Hungary at the 60th edition of the International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. In the SA project, she represents Hungary.

Waldemar Tatarczuk – director of the Labyrinth Gallery and curator of several projects with Ukrainian artists, organised in Poland and Ukraine. He will act as coordinator of the exhibition at the Labyrinth Gallery with 15 female participants in the project, as well as curator of the platform ‘The Sky Is Open’.

Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation (Poland), in partnership with Artsvit Gallery (Ukraine) and Galeria Labirynt (Poland) invites women artists of the young generation to participate in the project ‘Secondary Archive. Women Artists in War’.

The initiative aims to create a unique repository of artistic testimonies in the face of the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. We are committed to preserving contemporary Ukrainian art and discovering and giving visibility to women artists who address war trauma in their work.

The result of the project will be the addition of 15 new names (including 5 selected through an open call) to the Secondary Archive – an online, multinational art platform for women artists from Central and Eastern Europe. The Archive aims to discover, promote, and reflect on the socially engaged contemporary art of women of the region. In addition, all 15 female participants will be added to the archive ‘The Sky Is Open. Voices From Ukraine’, dedicated to collecting works of Ukrainian artists created after February 24, 2022. They will also be invited to participate in an exhibition in the Galeria Labirynt, Lublin, opening next year.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: women artists working in any medium born in or after 1991 in Ukraine. who explore in their work the topic of war and trauma, particularly in relation to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Open Call is open to anyone who identifies herself as a woman and as a Ukrainian artist.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: artists interested in participating are required to send both English and Ukrainian versions of the following documents:

1.A brief biography (up to 550 characters).
2. A short letter of motivation explaining your artistic practice (max. size – 2000 characters in one language). SELECTION PROCESS:

From the submitted entries, the jury will select 5 artists to be added to the Secondary Archive. In addition, the winners’ work will become part of ‘The Sky Is Open. Voices From Ukraine’, an archive of works by artists from Ukraine created after 24 February 2022. The honoring of the winning women artists will also take place through participation in the exhibition at the Galeria Labirynt, planned for early 2024.

«Secondary Archive. Художниці у війні»: Open Call для молодих українських мисткинь.

З-поміж 120 заявок міжнародне журі обрало 5 мисткинь, чиї висловлювання будуть додані у Secondary Archive.

Фіналістками стали:

І загальна переможниця Дарія Чечушкова.

Роботи фіналісток, разом із 10-ма іншими художницями, відібраними кураторками – Катериною Яковленко, Оксаною Брюховецькою, Алею Сєгал – також стануть частиною проєкту «The Sky is Open. Voices From Ukraine», архіву робіт митців та мисткинь з України, створених після 24 лютого 2022 року. Кульмінацією проєкту стане виставка в Galeria Labirynt, що дасть можливість для Архіву вийти за межі його віртуального простору.

Усі фіналістки отримають гонорар за участь у проєкті, а переможниця також отримає фінансову винагороду для підтримки своєї мистецької практики.

Bogna Stefańska – історикиня мистецтва, кураторка, співзасновниця кінофестивалю HER Docs і дослідниця Anti-Fascist Year Atlas. Кураторка польської частини Secondary Archive.

Erëmirë Krasniqi – письменниця, кураторка та дослідниця. З 2017 по 2024 рік була виконавчою директоркою Oral History Kosovo. Róna Kopeczky – історикиня мистецтва та кураторка із Будапешта, співзасновниця Easttopics – платформи, присвяченої східноєвропейському мистецькому життю. У 2024 році Róna буде кураторкою павільйону Угорщини на 60-ій Міжнародній художній виставці Венеціанська бієнале. У проекті Secondary Archive вона представляє Угорщину.

Waldemar Tatarczuk – директор та куратор Galeria Labirynt, куратор кількох проєктів з українськими художниками/-цями, організованих у Польщі та Україні та проєкту The Sky is Open. Він виступить співкуратором виставки за результатами Secondary Archive. Художниці у війні.

Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation (Польща) у партнерстві з Галереєю Артсвіт (Україна) та Galeria Labirynt (Польща) запрошують мисткинь молодого покоління до участі у проєкті «Secondary Archive. Художниці у війні».

Ця ініціатива спрямована на створення унікального архіву мистецьких висловлювань на тлі повномасштабного російського вторгнення в Україну. Ми маємо на меті фіксацію та збереження сучасного українського мистецтва, а також прагнемо підтримати художниць, які працюють з травмою війни у своїй творчості. За результатами конкурсу міжнародне журі обере 5 мисткинь, які візьмуть участь в проєкті; ще 10 буде обрано кураторською групою.

У підсумку 15 нових імен увійдуть до Secondary Archive – багатонаціональної онлайн платформи, присвяченої творчості жінок із Центральної та Східної Європи. Архів має на меті популяризувати, відкривати та рефлексувати соціально важливі явища сучасного мистецтва з перспективи художниць. Крім того, усі 15 учасниць будуть додані до архіву ‘The Sky Is Open. Voices From Ukraine’, присвяченого зібранню українського мистецтва, що було створено після 24 лютого 2022 року (ініційований Вальдемаром Татарчуком та галереєю Лабіринт). Ми також запросимо художниць взяти участь у виставці, що відбудеться в галереї Лабіринт наступного року.

ХТО МОЖЕ ВЗЯТИ УЧАСТЬ у open call: молоді художниці, які народилися після проголошення незалежності України (1991 року або після), та працюють з будь-якими медіа. Ми шукаємо мисткинь, що досліджують у своїй творчості тему війни і травми, яка її супроводжує, зокрема у зв’язку з російським вторгненням в Україну. Open call відкритий для всіх, хто ідентифікує себе як жінка та як українська художниця.

ВИМОГИ ДО ЗАЯВКИ: мисткині, зацікавлені в участі, мають надіслати наступні документи українською та англійською мовами:

1. Коротка біографія (до 550 знаків).
2. Мотиваційний лист із поясненням вашої мистецької практики (максимальний об’єм – 2000 знаків однією мовою). Ваше фінальне висловлювання базуватиметься на мотиваційному листі, поданому для конкурсу, та буде доопрацьоване у співпраці з кураторками. Більше інформації на https://secondaryarchive.org/about/

Катерина Яковленко – кураторка української частини проєкту Secondary Archive; незалежна кураторка та публіцистка з України. Головна редакторка порталу «Суспільне Культура», дослідниця, авторка та упорядниця видання «Чому в українському мистецтві є великі художниці».

Оксана Брюховецька – кураторка української частини проєкту Secondary Archive; художниця, кураторка та публіцистка. Співредакторка книги «Право на правду. Розмови про мистецтво та фемінізм». У Secondary Archive відповідає за розробку концепцій дослідження.

Аля Сєгал — кураторка української частини проєкту Secondary Archive, мистецтвознавиця, незалежна кураторка та дослідниця, наукова співробітниця Одеського національного художнього музею. У своїй практиці вона досліджує сучасне українське мистецтво, репрезентацію жінок у ньому, регіональні течії та андерграундні угрупування.
