Komentatorki / Women Commentators Festival was an event based on a relationship and interaction with the public. The objective was the creation of a broader space for a dialogue between Russian and Ukrainian female artists and the Polish audience. The project, conceived as a combination of visual arts and political science, strived to promote activities of women working in a variety of art media as well as their presence in public life. It defied stereotypes, provided new information, which might have not been widely known at the time, and engaged wider audience.
The underlying assumption of the festival was that we didn’t want to ignore either the current political and artistic events, or the situation of women in general. We wanted to have real impact and we knew that art was the perfect tool to achieve that goal.
Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation supports young female artists who use unusual forms of artistic expression and whose common denominator is the compelling need to reflect upon the world around them – their social and political surroundings. The 2014 edition of the Women Commentators project was dedicated to the activities of young female artists from Russia and Ukraine. Each of the invited artists developed their own way of analysing modern-day problems. This aspect added even more dimensions and value to the project – it invited to participate in a discussion that did not exclude any group and made no assumptions.
During the festival we launched an exhibition, organised debates and workshops held by artists and invited special guests: experts on art, social sciences and politics. We also organised film screenings prepared in collaboration with our partners: Planete+ Doc Film Festival (now: Docs Against Gravity Film Festival) and Against Gravity, concerts, performances and readings.
