Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation had the pleasure of organizing an exhibition of Katarzyna Rotkiewicz-Szumska. The exhibition took place in the Foundation’s headquarters on Bukowa street in Warsaw. It was open till the end of November 2014.
Katarzyna Rotkiewicz-Szumska is a painter who became interested in theatre. She studied painting and graphic art under prof. Jerzy Krechowicz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where she received a diploma in 1983. Since 1992 she has been co-creating the Teatr Cinema - the avant-garde organization combining visual arts and the movement theatre. Rotkiewicz-Szumska has been co-organizing the Theatrical Music Festival in Jelenia Góra. She won the award of Jerzy Boniecki Pocul Foundation. She was twice granted the scholarship of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. She lives and works in Michałowice, in Karkonosze, in the house which is also the Teatr Cinema headquarters, where numerous other artistic projects are carried out.
Katarzyna Rotkiewicz-Szumska’s paintings are expressive, exhibiting a fascinating vital energy in both abstract and figurative style. Although the artist depicts distorted people, toys and stones, the image remains recognisable and “real”. She chooses her subjects from pictures and real life, people and object that she knows, the landscape seen from her window. These are deeply meaningful portraits.
